One of AJ's practice videos...from this URL, you can find out few others.....please feel free to drop your comments, so he can do better. Why by the name A.J., you related it to violin??? He is 9 yrs. old and has studied violin for exactly one year and nine months today! (-:

Meatball said...

No, I guessed it because your first msg read "Jean & little violinist A.J. (-: said...". I figured that AJ must play violin otherwise he couldn't be a little violinist.

He is very talented! It is amazing what he can do in 1yr and 9 months!

Hi, Meatball,
I often visited your BLOG to find useful information related to violin study....really appreciate your generosity. I got permission to upload a video(just a little bit) of my son's violin maestro playing Shostakovich and would like to share it with you..hope you'll like it as much as we do.

Hi,

Wow, he is good! First when I read the name, I thought, hey, Povlov is teaching already? Then it turned out just to be someone else with the same name (got a friend, also a violinist, his name is also povlov).

How's AJ's vibrato practice going? That's the only thing bugging him in the last video I saw.

I'm glad you like it! Here is something I wrote about what AJ's been studying for the past few weeks.
http://www.wretch.cc/blog/JeanMexico&article_id=11755329

All his partituras are from Russia and I don't understand a word at all, well, only "Moscow". I tried to search the name of his scales & arpeggios in your articles, but couldn't find any name like it. The maestro pronounced the name like "Gregorian" or "Gregoriya".
Best Regards,
Jean

Hi Jean,

What are partituras? I don't know what this word means.

Russian schools have like the best technical training programme. I understand their principles of technical training (although not in detail), and I agree with almost all of them. Frankly I wished everybody would do the same.

"Gregorian" scales? I am sorry, I haven't seen them before. But you know, there are only THAT many different things u can do with scales.

Stretching is also about balance. it is easier to feel the "weight" is more bias towards the pinky , so u kind of "pull back" your index finger more. This should help but I suspect AJ's teacher already told him about it.

Thanks! "The best technical training programme....", well, then I should just let go all the names in Russian and trust the maestro. Sorry about my very messed up language..partitura(music sheet?) I guess.
Anyway, you are so helpful!!! I can't thank you more! Hopefully, we'll have chance to watch you play paganini one day...just a little bit. (-:

Hi Jean,

Ya, I guess it means sheet music, but I had to ask. :)

Ya, you know, stuffs like training from the 4th finger instead of the first, playing double stoppings as early as possible, looking at finger expansion early on, practice vibrato early, etc... they are all very sound choices. I have also seen a staccato training, very much like the one I use (I didn't invent mine, I stole it from some older masters of course. Why reinventing the wheels if you have things that work right?:P)

Chinese training is good too! But lots of it came from old Russian school so...

Well, I doubt that you will see my playing anytime soon. I recorded some Paganini stuffs and had friends listening to them. Technique-wise isn't bad, didn't find fault in intonation or sound production, but music is lacking. They sound like someone desperately trying to show off. Not a good thing...

AJ has music, so don't let him get away with playing fancy stuffs without a heart. :)

Thank you! (-:

"...not anytime soon" Well, we'll be very patient and wait.....ok! (-:
