Well, personally, I think wide vibrato is pretty bad even if the intonation is alright... Checked out many version of Dvorak VC on the high A at the end of the openning theme, almost everybody vibrate so wide that it actually sounds like B flat and A, it's one tone difference... (Acutally, the only person so far I haven't heard superwide vibrato is 鄭京和, and she's Galamian's student, so I guess my statement was wrong)
Go back to the video... My personal opionion is that most of the time when his intonation is off are double stops and during shifting. Indeed there are a few vibrato intonation problem for single notes at the beginning part; however, I think it's because he 'over-vibrate'... since the highest vibration note should be no higher than the note played.
And for the double stop, I think he has the same problem with me that unable to hear the correct Just Intonation that double stop should be using.

ReplyDeleteActually Galamian didn't teach vibrato. I don't know about DeLay but I am guessing that her teaching assistants would be teaching it for her.
Actually, if you looked at the video, you would find the vibrato is too wide that it affects his intonation.
I did not say wide vibrato is bad. I said wide vibrato that upsets intonation is bad.
